Weather
Field Trip Notes
Can anyone do something about the weather? Its a hot, muggy day and a thunderstorm might help break the heat. Ralphie fantasizes being a superhero - Weatherman - who controls the weather. He gets to live out his daydream when the class rides the Magic School Bus into the clouds. As Weatherman, Ralphie makes wind, an updraft, clouds, and rain. Then a thunderstorm moves in and the Magic School Bus is caught in the middle of it! Can Weatherman save then day?

Wind Spiral
Going Hands-On
Weatherman (a.k.a. Ralphie) mixes heat with air to create an updraft, and the Magic School Bus rides high into the sky! Your kids can see a small updraft by making wind spirals.
What You Need
  • Print off a copy of the WIND SPIRAL page Wind Spiral
  • Crayons or markers
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Thread in 1-foot-long pieces
  •  lamp with 75-watt light bulb - (without a shade)
Talk About ItWhat Is Wind? By Keesha
Ask children: Why does the warm air from the lamp affect the spiral the same way blowing from underneath it does?
What To Do
  1. Have kids decorate and cut out their spirals.
  2. Help them pull the needle and thread through the X on the spiral.
  3. Demonstrate how the spirals can turn in moving air. Hold one spiral up high by the string. Blow gently from underneath.
  4. Turn the lamp facing up. Let each child hold her spiral over the light bulb.
  5. What Happns - why?

Taylor's Prize
Read the story and answer the questions below
Aim - reading for meaning
by Anita Amin
On a sunny morning, Taylor went to the fair with her
parents.
It was busy there, with a lot to do. There were rides,
games, farm animals, and food.
Taylor ate a corn dog on the Ferris wheel. She
thought corn dogs tasted best high up in the sky!
After Taylor got off, she stopped at a game booth.
A man behind the counter held up a baseball. He pointed to a bottle on a
shelf behind him. “Hit the bottle and get a prize.”
“A prize?” Taylor looked at all of the prizes. She saw a big brown stuffed pony. It
looked soft. She really wanted it.
Taylor threw the ball. It went to the right of the bottle. “I missed.”
“Two more tries,” the man said.
Taylor threw the ball. It went right again. “I missed again!” Taylor frowned.
“Guess I won’t get that pony after all.”
“One more try,” the man said.
A bumble bee buzzed around Taylor's head. She didn’t like bees.
The bee landed on Taylor’s right arm. Taylor was scared. She quickly jolted to
the left and accidentally threw the ball.
Whack! The ball hit the bottle.
Everyone clapped.
“I won!” Taylor cried.
She cuddled with her new pony the whole way home.
Now she didn’t mind bees so much, either.

Literacy - Dragon Care Writing Activity

Instructional writing  - click on the link for the picture
When Mum came home form her trip to the desert she brought with her a smooth, shiny, blue oval shaped rock she found buried in the sand.  She thought it was the prettiest thing she had ever seen.  She was so surprised when the 'rock' started to wobble, crack and hatch!  Out popped a baby dragon.  It looked at Mum and then it looked at me and said,"Happy birthday.  You've always wanted a pet."

It was true, I had always wanted a pet.  But how do you care for a baby dragon?

Movies were okay.
